WASHINGTON (CBSDC) - The Washington Redskins have interest in interviewing current Steelers (and former Redskins) special teams coach Danny Smith for their head coaching vacancy, Tarik El-Bashir reported Wednesday.

Smith, who held the same position he currently holds with the Steelers for nine seasons in Washington, was largely considered a player favorite during his time here, but left for his hometown of Pittsburgh after the 2012 season. With many Redskins players from when he coached in D.C. still on the team, it’s understandable they would at least like the team to talk to Smith.

Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden, who reportedly had dinner with Bruce Allen in Reston Tuesday, sat down for an interview with the team today.

Gruden is the frontrunner to land the job, El-Bashir believes, citing holdovers on the Redskins’ coaching staff – namely Raheem Morris  and Sean McVay, who coached with Gruden in Tampa Bay – as not being coincidence.

“You start to kind of connect the dot here guys,” El-Bashir told 106.7 The Fan’s Lavar and Dukes. “No matter what business you’re in, managers like to hire guys they’re comfortable in.” Gruden also worked for Bruce Allen in Tampa.

“From the outset of the search, Jay Gruden was very, very high on the Redskins’ list,” El-Bashir said.
